I live outside the US and want to do film making or tv production. I plan to study in New York. Can anyone recommend any course I can take?

I've read on this forum that long term courses are expensive and unresourceful. Will short term courses help in getting contacts and making a career? Is there any other way of making it into the field? ?I will soon be graduating with a visual communication degree?.
