Hi, I'm really new to creating films. I'm a college student currently taking a class in video art. Today I just recieved my first assignment which is mostly technical with very little emphasis on theme.
The focus of the project is to become familiar on how the camera views space.
So I was wondering if anyone had some tips on spatial distortion or optical illusions and some good web resources on camera tricks.
Thanks in advance.
I think a good place to start is reading about the Dolly Zoom. This is an effect created when you focus on an object and then dolly the camera forward and zoom adjusted to keep that object the same size and focus the whole time. The background behind the object can distort a lot during this process and can tell you a lot about how the camera views space.

Hey thanks!
I checked out the link and bounced around a bit. This is what I found...
Dolly Zoom
Rack Focus
Forced perspective
If anyone knows of any other spatial related techniques feel free to send them my way.
Thanks again!
My point was specific to the dolly zoom though. The way the background appears (zoomed vs not zoomed) is very telling in how the camera views space. Flattening the image makes it appear to come closer to the subject (or unflatten and fall away) during a dolly zoom.
