I'm wondering what a student filmmaking with a budget of zero can do to get good muisc for his films.

How much does it cost to use (copyrighted) music in a film?

What are the rules for using classical music that is not copyrighted? What about if the reccording is copyrighted? How would I find a non-copyrighted recording?

Find a composer and get them to do the music for you: many will do it for free if it gives them a chance to do something different, and it's a whole lot simpler than trying to get clearance for pre-recorded music. Even if you happen to know a band, if they're signed up to a record company the company probably owns the copyrights so the band can't even give you permission to use their own music.
