I posted on here earlier about a series I'm making with some friends. Now when putting together the first episode we came to realize that a lot of the conversation is difficult to hear. We're very low budget (as in we have a camera and that's all) so are there any tips to make sound better seeing as how we don't have microphones to pin onto each character like they do in professional shows.

Any or all:
1. get a shotgun mic (e.g. Rode NTG-2 is only about $300)
2. keep mic as close as possible to the talker, the closer to the talker, the greater the signal to noise ratio.
3. don't raise gain any higher than needed or you introduce background hiss type noise.
4. turn off any automatic gain settings on mic or mixer or camera
5. consider ADR

300$ is far more then we can spend. Like 20$ is something do-able. By low budget.. it's really low budget.

OK all kidding aside, depending on your age and if you are in school, you *might* be able to beg and borrow a mic from your school if they do broadcasting or theatre, etc. You are on an ultra/no budget, so it is difficult to pull rabbits out of a hat. Maybe place an ad in an alternative newspaper in your town, see if an indie filmmaker could be kind and help you on set with her/his mic.

I'm the same way, I don't have a budget for even a Rode, though hopefully soon. I found a place near me where I can rent a Senheisser shotgun mic for $25 a day. If you feel that you really want this short, then I'm sure you can get everyone to pitch in money. That's only $5 if you have 5 people. Say you have 3 actors and one other crew member, there you go. Also, your church(if you go to a church and they have a choir) may be able to lend you a mixer/cords to allow you to connect higher end mics you rent to your camera.
