Hey there, I've never used that model but just pressing REC is not a good way to start. Try white and black balancing before anything, check your manual and find out where that button is. Try to avoid working on auto settings for anything, always work manual. Play around with the iris depending on the light conditions. Play around with the camera settings, see if you can play around with gamma settings or anything that can alter the color of the image. Something I've learned is that particular settings on the camera might produce more grain and I personally like a crisp image... so google for tutorials or anything that can help you understand the camera settings.

Most of all, try to work under great lighting conditions, white balance, play around with the iris and look for more camera settings. Avoid the old saying, "we'll fix that on post", try getting the image you're looking for right there and then.
