So I am a student and this is the first short film I have ever directed. Its actually the first time I have ever used a camera. I relied heavily on creating an atmosphere in this film and a style rather than the story and dialogue, hence the later two elements being subpar. Thoughts on it?

Hello nbhaga84
I posted on this forum and got no feedback despite almost 50 people reading the topic, and based on youtube counts, I know some of them viewed the video as well. Anyway, there are other forums out there where you can get some feedback, just be ready for very blunt criticism. You simply can't be think skinned, and put your work out there.

Yeah, it's too bad.

People show up, post their movie for feedback and never return. Or
they return a couple of times only to find no feedback so they
never return. It's too bad that you two have never joined in here
and never offered any feedback to other filmmakers. It's difficult
getting and building a thriving community when filmmakers like you
don't stick around.

I enjoyed it. I thought the length was good. I liked the cool retro black and white. One questions, did you intend to have the actors lips out of sync with the speaking? Also, when the two hitmen are on the bench speaking about taking out the assassin who failed in his job, I couldn't help but notice that the people walking by in the background were gawking at what was going on. For some reason, it seemed out of place. Good flow to the storyboard! Keep it up.

Oh, and certified instigator, I am not exactly sure how to take your comment. The internet is a funny thing, because it is often easy to take comments out of context, so I will just tell you that your statement seemed a little on the accusatory side. I appreciated your feedback on my film, and I thought you made some relevant comments. However, I am not sure about your intentions with these comments. Once again, I might be reading into what you said, however, I can tell you one thing. Overly aggressive regulars on any forum can easily drive away newbies.

CI is never accusatory. He's just saying he would like more people to stay on this forum and turn it into a true community of film makers (and aspiring film makers). And he's also saying he would like you to be a regular.

I apologize for coming off as overly aggressive.

Perhaps you're right. I guess expressing my desire to have more
people join in on these forums and offer feedback could be what is
driving away newbees. Many people post their films here and then
never return. Or maybe they are returning and find my posts overly
aggressive.

I never thought of it like that.

My intention was to point out that many people post their movies
here hoping for feedback but do not offer feedback themselves. You
didn?t (until after my post) and you even suggested nbhagat84
consider other forums. I fully understand why based on you
experience here.

I will try to come off as less aggressive in the future. I would
love to see more people post here - I see my desire to get
filmmakers like you to participate here is delivered in the wrong
way.

My apologizes.

Certified Instigator,

You seem like a reasonable and friendly fellow. I apologize if I took your comments out of context.

Thank you for your response.

You should be proud of this as your first attempt, i think the shaky camera work lent itself to the whole vibe if Im honest so dont be overly critical of that factor. Plus Id also like to point out that not all films have to be conventional, cause at the end of the day mate its your work and you should make it how ever yo feel it looks best. And in any case the more you film the more experience you'll get. And the issue of shaky camera work is easily solve with a tripod lol.

I enoyed the film personally, esspecaically the cinematography at th very end where h reach out for te door 😀 I thought that was very well done so it goes to show youve got an eye for camera work as well as really good locations which I also admired! As I thought some of your back drops were spectacular.

With regards to positive critercism though I thought the note under the door was a little bit cheesey lol, but its a student film so its no biggy lol. But some thing you should definately thik about is how you name your video, as some people flagrently dislike student films. Genrally Im one of those people as I tend to find their films excessively self pretensious! How everyours doesnt come of like that at all. Im also curious to know about the audio though personally as thats the only glaing thing that really lets this poduction down.

So all in all mate be proud of it for your first atempt as there are some really niceshots and is edited together nicely too.

Hope that helps.

But with regards the forum in genral I think Certifieds right, there are a lot of people who just view posts and dont actvely take part in the discussions. Im not sure if this is because people feel some of the contributons are irrelivent to them or because their negatively effected, but it sure would be nice to have more people contribute in here as some times it feels like theirs only really 3 of us here :/

So if your reading this and you dont take part I would urge you to take part as its great to get other peoples input and see things from a different perspective as Certifid has.

Hope this fed back helps you tho mate, all the best Cleary.

This is what I was writing about.

nbhagat84 never returned to read the thoughts on his movie. People
took the time to watch and comment, but we will never know if
anything we wrote was even seen.

Jim posted for a couple of days and then went away.

Is that because my post was a little on the accusatory side? I
tend to think that is not the case only because there are well
over 40 of these one time requests to look at and offer comments
on a movie. People who never return.

Even Jim Jones. He got up to 9 posts which is rare. The five or
six of us who post here regularly see this "drive-by" postings all
the time. I, personally, find it difficult to watch and comment on
a movie knowing the filmmaker will never return here.

And now I will get accusatory; Jim Jones was unhappy that no one
commented on his movie and then advised nbhagat84 to go somewhere
else to get comments. And then he left. As do 99% of filmmakers
who stop by asking people to watch their movie. It's too bad. I
would love to see more than six regular posters here.
