ok, i'm sure most people have figured this out, but i just did so i figured i would share it. There is a way to do slow motion with a normal camera, and it looks great. All you need is after effects and for your video to be interlaced (which unless you deinterlaced it, it should be fine). Start a new composition and set the frame rate to 15fps. Then import your footage. Right click on the footage and select -->interpret footage. Choose "conform frame rate to" and set it to 15fps. Then choose "seperate fields: lower first" This seperates the interlaced fields, and will allow after effects to generate the missing fields. Then select ok. Then drag your footage into the timeline. Then right-click the footage and select-->time--> time stretch. Set it to 200%. Press ok. To preview your footage you will have to set your preview frame rate to 15fps. Now play back your footage. It should play in a fluid, slow motion. You can export the footage as standard 29.97fps or whatever your project fps is.
Thanks for the tip!

ah nice, i'll give that a try. Another technique i picked up is to duplicate the video and place the duplicates on top of each other. Set the top clips opactiy to about 25% (or whatever looks good) and move it about a tenth of a second ahead of the clip on the bottom. Works pretty well.
A general tip for dv slomo is to record in interlaced video as this gives you more flames to play with (sort of)

Couldn't you just put the clip into after effects and slow it down/?
Jane 🙂
No because it's not interlaced and it will skip.
This also works for lots of other programs, same basic outline.
here's an example:
