Ive been noticing more and more recently that in alot of films where people are having a conversation the camera is moving (generally panning) ever so slightly, so slightly in fact that its hardly noticeable. The subjects themselves dont appear to move just the background and its not always during conversations, im just using this as an example. Also, its an extremely steady and fluid movement so i dont think its because the cam is hand held
Can anyone tell me whats happening here??
Thank you
Camera could be on a tripod and it's just slowly panning.

It would have to be moving a a caterpillars pace if this is how its achieved. Its hard to describe what im talking about without an example to show you.
Anyone else??
Its done with proffesional tripods, thats all just a basic pan.
"Imperfection equals Realism"
There are also electric gears that can assure your pan is a consistent speed so that the Camera operator doesn't have to worry about it.
Another option would be to shot normal and zoom in slightly during post and then slowly pan across from one edge of the frame to the other.

You are probably talking about shots using a geared head like this:
This method of ever so slightly moving the camera
started with "Hill Street Blues" and lots of DP's and
operators use it - sometimes fast movements to
give a documentary feel or very slowly for other
emotional effects.

Thanks all,
Seems like it will be pretty hard to achieve then with my VERY basic cam and tripod!
Very true.
Almost every aspect of filmmaking is pretty hard to achieve with
a VERY basic cam and tripod. But those that do it are several
steps ahead of those that don't bother.

I dont let basic equipment stop me making films....its the idea that counts and you use what you have available. Just like in the latest comp i entered, some very proffessional entries technically...but the ideas were dull.
