Sinking a Ferry for film

Hi Folks,

I made a post about destroying a house for film and that's coming along nicely so thanks for the input.

However this one might be a little more difficult as I need to create the effect of ferry sinking for the same film.

Budget is nill (as always) but I can be resourceful, but not to the point of having an actual ferry. I can build a model and try and sink that.

Does anyone have any ideas how else I could achieve this?

Three thoughts:

1) The standard way, make the model really large so the water doesn't give things away.
2) Make the model small but use software to superimpose it over real water. And use CGI to fix the water.
3) Look for stock footage that might work as model ships never look really good.

One followup crazy idea. Get in a helicopter and fly over a ferry so that you get shots of the side and top of the ferry (or if there is a bridge that Ferry's pass beneath or something). Then chop and chop that into background footage of the water. If done right you might get the illusion that the Ferry is rolling over as it goes down. This sounds a bit to iffy but you might be able to baby it frame by frame and get it to work.

Some other ideas, because the 3 above are not gonna look as good as you'd like you'll want to cut in other shots.

(1) Folks on the shore looking, commenting. For extra comedy points do the Holy Grail and have one of them say "it's just a model".
(2) Someone on the boat noticing water at their feet. Others jumping overboard yelling we're sinking. For extra comedy points have someone yell, "Jr, did you overflow the toilet again you little shit"
(3) A character POV of the shoreline that gradually shakes, tilts, and rises as if the character was sinking with the boat. For extra comedy points have the camera sink to the point that it is underwater. Need an underwater box to pull it off but it could be funny.

Additional thoughts. Have it rain, or dark so that you hide the bad effects. This can be done in post if you don't like the effect but you'll need any cuts with actors to match so you might want to do the speciel effect first, or plan on reshooting.

This is one HELL of a zero budget movie! I really want to see it when it's finished.

Cheers for the pointers Rjschwarz, I never thought about the extra ones of people with water at their feet. That's a nice touch.

It is a heck of an ambitious project but one that hopefully we will pull off.

Get some MDF and cut it into pieces of wall and decorate it like you might find it on a ferry. Get a 2p gambling machine if you can 😛 Get wood chippings and debris too! Then shake the walls about, get a few screaming closeups & there you have more cutaways.

If only you have ?700 then you could sink this!

I couldn't find any cheaper model boats, though, sorry 🙁 Airfix might do something, but its only a cargo ship.

Thanks for the cheers, solving creative challenges is fun. A lot more fun than my current day job.

If you want the water to look more real use Kodak Photoflo, its a thinning agent.

This is brilliant, I didn't think of using an alternative to water to give it a heavier effect. Cheers Mandor.

And also cheers Mods for the links and the additional debris tips.
