Hey,

This is my first post on this forum and i first wanted to say how helpful ive found it just browsing old posts.

Ive been crazy about films eversince i can remember (im 27) but id never thought about making my own until a few weeks ago when an idea came to me out of nowhere, now i cant stop thinking about it and i have got to make it happen. Ive been researching script writing and film making tecniques and so far i have a treatment which im now converting into a full screenplay.

My question is this.....I dont think i can make this film as a short as there are so many levels to the idea that i feel i wont be able to explore them fully if i limit myself to say 30 mins or under. It really does need to be feature length. Am i biting of more than i can chew with it being my first film???

So far for cast and crew i have the following:

My house mate has a degree in film & media and has done camera work for the BBC as well as making a couple of shorts so he will do the cinematography, lighting and editing.

Both my friend and i have sound engineering qualifications so we will take care of the sound.

For actors i will advertise at my university and also at the local Metro cinema which is also run by the university.

Your thoughts would be most appreciated.

Matt

doing a feature for your first film ever is a bit ambitious BUT that doesnt mean you wont be able to do it. You all seem to be qualified on the education level. However there are more than university degrees that are needed to make a film. you are gonna need a shot list, story board, decided weather you are shooting film or digital, you have to deal with actors (could be good or bad...depends on teh actor), etc...

but as i already said, none of this means you wont be able to do it. Are you biting off more than you can chew? we will see when its finished. But go for it and see what happens

"Anyone who has ever been privileged to direct a film also knows that, although it can be like trying to write 'War and Peace' in a bumper car in an amusement park, when you finally get it right, there are not many joys in life that can equal the feeling." - Stanley Kubrick

I'd strongly advise against starting with a feature, it's a mountain of work and a very hard thing to pull off with absolutely no previous experience. If your material is too much for a short get some different material and save this idea for when you have a bit more experience, otherwise, you'll make half the film you potentially could do and probably hate yourself for it. Get something short and sweet and 5 minutes, see how it goes making that before you try and fill 90 minutes. The idea for the short doesn't even have to be all that good, you don't HAVE to show it to people, but you should get some practice before approaching a full feature.
