I, like many others, have a camera that can only shoot in letterbox and not true 16:9. I have found a solution for this if you want a widescreen movie. What you need is adobe after effects...or a program like it. What you do is import the video in as a normal aspect ratio video, and then create a sequence(this is in adobe after effects) which is in widescreen. Now you might be tempted to drag the video to fill the monitor, but dont...not exactly....open the info window and in it when you drag the video to a larger size it gives you % of how big it is. drag it so it fills the width(on mine it was 33%) and then drag the height to the same....and now you have true widescreen...it does cut out some of the image...so if you want to frame it up correctly you will need a site which i found that tells you how to "mask" your lcd to show what it will look like in widescreen...i cant find the website now...but if you are interested e-mail me at silversfilms?yahoo.com with the subject of widescreen mask and i will send you the file...hope this helps...and if you have questions e-mail me or reply to this post

Final Cut Pro also has an effect matte simply called "widescreen" and can be configured to your desired aspect ratio.
