Heyhey

New here, long-long-time aspiring filmmaker (we're talking way back when I was a young'un), needing that BIG first step. Don't want to ask the same old "what kind of camera should I buy?" questions but here's my brain-pickins: currently in a program at Guelph, want to finish cause I've already put too much money and time into it to bail out now. Looking at York and Sheridan, among others, for film programs after Guelph. If any of you out there either did or are studying at either wouldja mind posting yer opinions and how they would accomadate someone who is a virgin when it comes to the technical aspects of filmmaking.

AND on a sidenote...I'm at that point where I just wanna get my hands on ANY camera, get out there on a little-to-no-budget budget and start making some movie magic Rodriguez-style! My mind's a-burstin' with a plethora of movie ideas. But what I need is a door to open just a bit so I'll know what all the buttons and switches on a camera do, ALL the technical details of the photography/sound/music/etc. etc. etc.

ANY help here is greatly appreciated, whether it's pointing the way to a cheap camera to start experimenting with or where I can learn the ways of the equipment.

Thanks all!

- Monty

hi, are you thinking of a postgrad course in film? If not, the film undergrad degrees are 4 years!! In toronto, it seems Ryerson uni is the best, the BA in Image Arts, york i also heard was good. Sheridan is a diploma right, so i suppose it depends on whether you want a degree or diploma.

It would have to postgrad I guess, I'm just finishing up a BA at Uni of Guelph. What I really want is experience, don't really care whether I get a degree or a diploma out of it, I want to get into the field and be able to make films because I feel that's all I really need.
I was looking at going for an MFA in Screenwriting and Production, but I need more info, looking for something geared more towards actual production than anything else I think.
BTW, thanks for responding! I appreciate it!

Hey Monty,

I'm currently in my second year of Architecture at U of Waterloo and also have a diploma in Film Production from Confederation College in Thunder Bay. I'm not surprised if you had not considered Con College, or had even been aware of the school at all. It doesn't get much press, or have the flashly advertising afforded by the bigger schools in southern Ontario, however, if you ask around the industry, from Halifax to Vancouver people know Confederation College.

Thunder Bay isn't much to look at if you want hard urban vibe of Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. But if you are looking for a place to get-away from the life that you knew and get serious about film, I believe it's the best school in the country.

2 year Program, shoointg 16 neg for a fration of the cost you will pay at any university. My tuition in second year was around $2300 CND plus $600 lab fee. That includes filmstock, equipment, process/transfer, editing, and an option to get your sound mixed professionally in Toronto. Plus you get a full coarse load. If your film is good they pay to send it out to a couple of festivals.
If it sounds too good to be true, I agree. I had no idea how good a deal I had attending school there, and wasn't my first choice either.

One of the best experinces of my life was learning the craft in Thunder Bay.

At the very least check-out www.conflix.com
