how do I get a really shallow depth of field using the panasonic dvx 100b? I want most of my shot s to have the character in focus and the background relatively blurred.
You could always cheat and do it in post.
Focus on the foreground and make sure that looks right. Then in post duplicate the layer and fuzz it out so that the background looks as out of focus as you want. Then matte the scene so the focused foreground character shows. You probably don't even need to be very careful in the matting as the info is identical and most people won't study the focus lines. This can be used to shift the focus to a character in the background just as easily.
It's cheating and I'm sure there is a better way regarding buying the proper lense or something but it should work.

I'm not sure about the lense on that camera, but heres how it works on most presumer's.
First have the object at least 15 feet away from the background, then zoom in on the foreground object. Then you just manually adjust the focus and should be able to 'fuzz' out the background.
