script ,how to sell

I have a question in th area of screenplays. Bceause besides knowing hwo to write them im clueless. Can somone please explain the process of selling a script, liek explain the legal ways and what not. Is there licensing? or watever. so anyone that just undestood that question, help me out

A script is usually not sold, it's optioned.

A prodCo will buy the rights to hold on to a script for a period of time - say one year - and pay the
writer - say $5,000. During that option period the writer cannot shop the script around.

The prodCo will attract cast and a director and put together financing. The writer will then be paid
an agreed upon sum if the movie goes into production. From that point the prodCo owns all rights
to the script.

If the company cannot get the movie financed during the option period then all rights revert back to the writer.

There must be an online service for screenwriters and registration of their work. Otherwise you can always contact an agent, who can try to sell it. There is a lot of agencies looking for talented writers.

You can register your screenplay online with the Writers Guild of America. This will help you in the case of a who wrote what scenario if someone else is brought in to rewrite your work and they need to determine credits and thus paychecks. It's not so good regarding copyright. You can register your screenplay with the US Copyright office (I think online as well). This will help you in a court of law if someone tries to steel your screenplay. It won't help so much during contract arbitration. You really should register in both places before sending a screenplay out and about.

There are online services to get your screenplay to production companies but I don't know if these are successful or even worth the time or not. I suspect not.

I am only acquanted with the european market. Is it difficult in US to get an agent for talented writers?

You did not answer my question. The list will cover following countries: Scandinavia, Poland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, England, Portugal, Russia, Turkey. Some might be located or moved to US and some might be closed down. Most of the agents are connected to a larger agency or they are self employed. Research, google and contact them yourselves.

Every agency is looking for talented writers but maybe not now, or maybe not for that type of budget and/or genre, or perhaps they are rip-off guys who want writers in their stable but don't actually do anything for them until the writer gets a deal on their own, or a million other reasons. I think Certified was looking for more detailed info rather than a google search (or the Creative Directory for that matter).

I haven't read scripts from any writer on these forums. So I can't
name any.

And no, I'm not telling you writers can't find agents or jobs. I
simply asked a question. Until now I thought that perhaps you
had some information that would be helpful and that you might
be willing to share some of that.

I see I was mistaken.

I'm sorry you thought that I was suggesting that talented writers
couldn't find agents or jobs because I asked you a question
about European agents.

All I was interested in is knowledge and a little conversation on
a messageboard.

BTW - You listed the agency that represents me. I know for fact,
based on actual knowledge, that they are not looking for new writers.
Perhaps more on your cut and past list aren't.

The list is from winter 2007. After finding my agency, I stopped looking of course.

The list is one year old. thats why I wrote "Research, google and contact them yourselves"

That means, find out whos from which agency, whos looking, whos good and maybe recommended by other writers etc etc. Their needs might not be the same as for last year, but no matter what there will always be agents/agencies looking for talented writers. I would believe the problem is the other way around. Finding a talented writer. A really good writer. Thats why I asked you to list (only) 3. They don't come around that often, that's for sure.

I know why you wrote that and I know why you did a simple copy/paste
and sarcastically offered to copy/past the rest of the alphabetical list.

What I was hopping for is an interesting discussion about agents in Europe
with someone with experience in that area - an area I know nothing
about - someone with an agent who was willing to offer more than "use Google".
I can use Google. What I can't do very often is have a discussion with a fellow
writer from Denmark who has experience with European agents.

I'm sorry you aren't willing to have that discussion.
