My goal is to write scripts which would land me an agent and get more writing work. How more/less realistic or more/less difficult is this than wanting to sell the scripts themselves?

Theoretical question, just curious.

The main problem is that it's hard to get an agent without first selling a script :). At a minimum you'll probably need three or four decent feature scripts to get an agent to take you on as a client... for obvious reasons they don't want people who'll write one script and spend years trying to sell it, they want people who'll keep writing for years and making money for them as a result.
