I'm in the Navy, and I am interested in film in my spare time, I have already worked on a few projects for school, even polished them up in my spare time now I have my own computer and I can edit them the way I want them, but anyway, I will be down in San Diego soon and I would love to get into some volunteer work in my spare time if I have any. Does anyone know who takes on volunteers or who can I contact to volunteer to do anything in independent, local films, really anything? I am just interested in working on the scene, money isn't important.
Down in San Diego soon. When is soon?

Hey. I was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego! That was about 10 years ago though (USS Rushmore). Somehow I got into making indie films. You HAVE to get a DV camera, if you don't already have one. I wish I would have known my filmmaking interest back then. I spent too much time at the bars after we pulled into a foreign port. Man, you will be able to shoot some great stuff. Grab some locals in those ports (Malaysia, Thailand, Jordan, Philippines, ...) and throw something together with just your cam. I envy your position. I assume you aren?t there for shore duty.
Also, if you are really into it, You should hook up with the MR (machine) and HT (weld) shop on you ship (if it has them) and start building some filming equipment (jib, stabilizer, dolly, etc). I have some home built stuff on my site you can check out: http://www.snodart.com/hbe.php . You should also visit http://www.homebuiltstabilizers.com if you are interested in doing this.
My brother-in-law and I are 2 hours north of you. We have mostly been building equipment and doing test shots and clips. Sort of putting ourselves through our own film school. We are working toward shooting a short sometime in the future. We are small time, but still filmmakers all the same. Anyway, send me an email, so I have yours in my address book if you are interested in getting involved at some point.
