You gotta start off small before you can become big is what I say. 🙂
You check for productions shooting in your area and apply for the job.
A good place to start is on student films at the bigger film schools. You'll learn a lot by being on a set without the pressure of a pro shoot and build your resume. Most student films will let you do more, too - like second AC and grip work - which will help in your knowledge.
