Given that I've not decided on a format yet (replies to other post welcome!), I'm fairly sure that whatever format it is, my computer isn't going to be able to handle the editing on its own.
What I'd like to do, is work with a low-quality copy of the video, editing sequences together, and then take the index sheet (?) to a pro-edit suite to render the edits at full quality.
Does this sound reasonable? What software would I need to do this? I've worked with audio a lot but never done any video work.
Cheers,
Tony
I think a computer could handle it.
Firstly what computer do you have?
Secondly I use a external hard drive to store all the files as they wont fit on the computers memory. This seems to work fine. Im not really sure what level your at. What software have you used before. I have some software I would recomend but I don't know your aims so don't know if it would be to amatuer or too expensive/professional (if you get what i mean!!)

I don't know the exact spec, getting it from a friend and it's probably around 4 years old. I'd be able to add an external drive if that helps speed things up. Is processor speed important, or is it more about having enough memory?
I'm just looking for some basic features, not pro-level effects - as long as I can cut scenes together, sync to audio tracks, switch between two shots while keeping the audio track from one of them, simple fades and dissolves, that would do me.
I've used MIDI and audio extensively, but never touched on video. In my naive way I'm thinking it's the same but with pictures. Any suggestions for software? Cheap or free is especially good. 🙂

Tony if you search 'editing software' in the search box at the top you will find alot of posts discussing this topic. I found this question which mentions it:
