I am going to be filming a documentary style movie and want to see if anyone has any recommendation on the type of camera to use (under $4000)? I want the film to have the look of a live show (such as a presidential address, game show, daytime soap opera) as opposed to the look of major motion picture. I was thinking of the Canon XL1s or XL2 along with good lighting and a wireless mic so the camera doesn't pick up the noise made by the camera.
I could be wrong but I think it was the Canon Xl1 that had autofocus issues which might be okay for moviemaking but would suck for documentary filming. Hopefully someone on this forum can correct me or back me up if I'm talking about the right camera or not.

One of the answers on the above link doesn't mention any problems about the focusing problem on XL1 (the focusing issue is definitely important to me because the people I'm filming will be moving around on stage). It does, however, mention that the miniDV is not the best choice when it comes to quality. One of the posters recommended the Sony DVR-PD170 because you can film in DVCAM. Any opinions on this one?
