Hello All I'm a newbie director, Its always a passion but i'm goin at it full throttle now. I have a question what should I be aiming for to break into the buisness? Should I be getting the movies out in festivals, or should i be contacting agents or just working on movie and t.v. sets. I realize there isnt a formula but how does it usually happen, how do big names like shymalan, fincher, spielberg break in? Did people come up to them and just give them a multi-picture deal right out the bat, or did they test them out to prove them and then give them the deal. Sorry if this sounds confusing, i'm just curious. Thanks ?:D?

Make good movies and work on everything that you can. AFAIR Spielberg started out in TV (wasn't 'Duel' originally a TV movie that got theatrical distribution?) and Fincher started out directing commercials before he got his first feature deal.

Basically, you're trying to convince people that if they give you millions of dollars to make a movie then you'll not only not screw it up, but you'll make something good enough to give them a decent profit. The best way to do that, unless you happen to be related to some producer in the business already, is to make some stuff that impresses people, be it short films, low-budget features, TV shows, commercials, music videos, or whatever.
