As part of my first experiment into screenwriting, I am starting to write a script with a setting that takes place in a major city in the 1970's. My question is, do you think it is plausible to realistically emulate this setting in modern times?
Based on your somewhat cryptic question, I shall assume the following:
1. The script you're writing is expected to be produced;
2. The budget for that production will be as necessary.
If this is to be done by a major studio, or with some proper financial support, then the answer is yes. If the studios can plausibly and realistically emulate the surface of Mars, Vienna of 18th century, Spain of 15th century, Washington, DC of the 50s and 60s, then I think there is no question it would be possible to find locations and do the necessary (whether by physical alteration to those locations, or by visual effects) in order to make those locations look like they did in the 70s.
Now, if this script is to be produced by an independent filmmaking team, on a small, limited, or shoestring budget, then the challenges to making it look like 70s would be formidable. One would need massive amounts of creativity in order to pull such a thing off, but it wouldn't be completely impossible. What indie filemakers lack in hard cash, they usually try to make up in invested personal time and DIY kind of thinking.
Without any more specific details, it is difficult to provide any more specific answers.
Sorry about the ambiguity of the question. Your response is what I was looking for, though, and does help me out. Thank you!
