Hello everyone, I'm new here and have been shooting my own home films since I was very young and have always been into films and film making. Now I'm in the process of starting my first project that will be on a more professional level. The film will be a stop motion animation short and I need some advice on rights and what kind of contracts I need. The screenplay is my own but I'll be having people making the dolls/puppets, designing the sets, composing music etc.
I'm quite confused about what kind of paperwork I need to get together. I'm not looking to make much of a profit off of this film obviously. But I do hope to submit it to some festivals and maybe offer it on DVD myself if people are interested in it. I do fine art as well so I do have a bit of an audience already who are interested in my work.
I believe using peoples creations is more or less the same across the board, you just need to get their permission to use it in writing. Write out a very specific article detailing who is giving who rights and for what (project), when (it was made), and where (it is to be shown). When profit comes into the equation you must either work them into it or have them relinquish any claims to it.
I agree with the last 'caller', you need a simple "release form" for all concerned, talent and crew (animators/set and puppet makers/voice artists etc.). They are easily found from the internet. Good luck with the project.
