Hi,I am a film student just starting off.I always wanted to be a screen writer, but I also want to get into the audio side of things, particularly in composing music. I was wondering if you guys could give me any recommendations on where to start or what books or software I should obtain? Thanks for your time.
Find people who want music for their movies and compose it :). But be warned that there are many, many times more aspiring composers than movies... at one point it seemed that I couldn't put an ad for an actor or runner on the Web without getting a dozen composers mailing me to see if I wanted music too.
Hi Mark, thanks for replying to my post,I appreciate it.I will have to keep that in mind if I ever decide to mainly be a composer. But I was wondering how to get started? I don't know which software is the best or which book to read to obtain knowledge on composing.
I would recommend a program called Cool Edit Pro, its economical but you get a lot of bang for your buck. I play guitar and have been learning piano/keyboard and am just in the process of writing my first movie score so I'm almost in the same boat you are just with a little more experience. As for the actual recording aspects there are a lot of good info on the net. If you haven't done multitrack recording before you might want to start reading there. If I give you one tip it is to have each instrument on a different track so you can add effects and EQ each one seperately.
Hope this helps.
PS I think Nero 6 and up (the burning software)has a multitrack editor built into it. I'll try to find out and get back to you.
?EDIT?
I have some samples that I just uploaded to show some other people so I figured I'd give you the links too. The first track is not corrupted it is supposed to sound like radio interference, it picks up about half way through. These were recorded in Cool Edit using either my guitar via a usb effects pedal or from the headphone output of my Yamaha PSR295 keyboard.
