when i connect my Canon Optura 50 to my computer, it does not register and i cannot transnfer the video into my editing software. HOWEVER, wheni switch the camera from tape to memory card mode the computer recognizes my camera. What is the problem???

You need to use a "firewire" cable to connect your camera to your computer's "firewire" card.
