when i place my clips on the timeline and then view the video on the viewer, the clips do not fill the entire video. there is a thick black border around the clip.

does anybody know why this could be.

Question, is the black border on the first frame or throughout. Is the black border cover parts of your image or is your image shunk by that much? It is also possible you have your viewer set to something less than 100%, you could try increasing the size of the image in the viewer.

its not the viewer. that is the first thing i checked. my clip is shrunk by that much and the black border is there throughout the entire clip no matter what clip i use.

I don't know. I'd try:
http://www.lafcpug.org/

That's the Final Cut Pro User group out of LA. Most Hollywood Editors that use Final Cut Pro "probably" are members. Certainly someone there will have an answer for you.

You might have already firgured it out by now... but just in case you're still fighting it.......

The problem is your original video is a small size to begin with, and, bad news, that's as big as it's gonna get. What you have to do to make it fit the frame is make sure your "WIREFRAME" is turned on in the toolbar at the top of your CANVAS. With that on, the video clip should have a lined box on it's edges with little dots on each corner. Now you can change it's shape. Just drag one of the corners out to the edges of the canvas and there you have it! It's pixelated, but depending on how visually apetizing the shot wa to begin with, it might work with some color correction. If you want to make the clip shape-shift oblongly (word?), just hold SHIFT while you do the same motion.

Let me know if that helped.

actually. i have figured it out. the problem was that my video frame size did not match that of the sequence.

new problem though. after rendering video it messes it up. i found that using a de-interlacing filter fixes the problem, so it must be interlacing it whiler rendering it. so is there a way to make it not interlaced when rendering. heres a screenshot of the problem. the frame in the viewer is pre-render, the frame in the canvas is post-render.
