im extremely new at this and i wonder if it is unwise to post an idea for a film here, fearing that someone will steal my idea and make what could have been my money of it?

If you post your idea here it and ask for advice, of coudse we're gonna help you, and I give you my word that I won't steal your idea?:)?. And i don't think many people would.

Ideas are a dime a dozen, it is the implementation of the idea (and that means hard work) that is worth securing. I would copyright or register any screenplays before posting them but otherwise I wouldn't worry.

Of course if your idea is so unique (Blair Witch marketing on the internet for example) it might be worth keeping hush about.

ok, ah well i trust u guys 😛 anyway it's just an idea after all, and im pretty sure im not gonna make the movie anyway..
so i was thinking..
that steve fossett guy is lost in the nevada desert right now, i just saw the news, and i thought that would make a great movie! a seasoned adventurer crashes in the desert without any way of calling for help and his family and friends tries to find him while he struggles for his life...
any comments?

I'm going to have to disagree. I don't believe it's ever a good idea to post your story ideas in a public forum such as this.

I think the risk is minimal to nonexistant to begin with but...

Sometimes two asteroid movies come out around the same time. Or two volcano movies, or two Robin Hood movies. Or three underwater movies. These are ideas that were come up by two different writers (or producers) around the same time. Sometimes one is written and dug out of a drawer because another was greenlighted, othertimes they whip a script out fast.

You could say that the idea was 'stolen' but legally it wasn't and in each case the implementation is drastically different so as to be basically unrecognizable as the same idea. If you post a screenplay you are taking a bigger risk.

I do believe you can register ideas with the WGA if you feel you want greater protection.
