This is my first attempt at making a suspense type movie. I made this movie almost a year ago and I now feel I can do a much better job. I used one camera for this project and I KNEW NOTHING about lighting and I still dont. Does anybody got any tips or suggestions.
Thanks for your time.

Really liked it. The suspense and plot twists were all well done, and there were a lot of very well shot sequences; as you said yourself it's just the production values that need upping. Read some books on cinematography, sound etc etc to get an idea about what you're aiming for. Loved the dog in the scene as well 😀

you know.. to be COMPLETELY honest with you. I liked it!! I liked the use of music, the shots were done pretty well. Hmm.. I dont know what really else to say, besides congrats. I enjoyed it, and you are the first person to make a short that i sat through and said o sh*t at the end when you realize whats happening. I would be interested to see what you can do with professional grade equipment and lighting and sound.
I might be 18 **(just turned 19 April 4th)**, but watch out, everyone has to start somewhere. I'm just starting a bit faster and bigger. 🙂

I liked it, too. You've got a good grasp of the story telling basics and you have the Carpenter and Tarantino shots down. So you now need to experiment with the technical aspect. I don't think you need professional grade equipment - I think you just need to use a few lights. It's easy to just point and shoot when you're using video - you see in on the screen, it must be okay.
Buy a couple of clamp-on lights and a paper lantern or two - learn to use back light to add depth. A couple of examples:
That shot where the guy sits on the couch and picks up the phone: the back ground is fully lit - we can see the ironing board well and even the kitchen, but his face is in the dark. Hang a paper lantern near the camera, expose for his face and the background goes darker - that way the audience is focused on the face of the actor and we can't see what's in the dark behind him.
Was the shot silhouette shot of the guy (in the room with the pool table) intentional? It looked great, but since all your shots are nearly silhouettes it's hard to tell. If your other shots were lit well, that shot would really stand out.
Nice work.

Its one of those shorts where I say "its nearly all the way there". Whole thing is overlit for the most part considering the subject matter. Pity it didn't have an original soundtrack and the Halloween mask? Made it a bit pastiche. BUT....
One can't argue with this based on the fact that its easy to see its a zero budget job from aspiring filmmakers. I was touched by it. Its yet more really decent stuff from young budding filmmakers. Editing was tight enough. Framing and matching of shots was a little off, but still an achievement all the same. I don't believe in righting off. Whoever made this should persue the career in film.
Any hardware store will have those clamp on work lights - you might even have a few in your garage right now: http://www.doityourself.com/invt/u239921
Paper lanterns can be purchased at most home improvement stores - check out the garden area - at Ikea and at national companies like Lamps Plus.

Thanks for your response. I see I have some things to work on. Including lighting and making my own music. I really appreciate the feedback.
