I've heard about using paper lanterns as a source for cheap soft lighting, but what do you use to mount them where you want? I can't really mess around and experiment because of the fire hazard.

Most paper lanterns are hung, I believe. Either from a roof or the handle you hold it on is on the top.

The lanterns are simply a light cord coming out of the lantern. It is best to hang them from a C stand or other piece of equipment...maybe even use a ladder...anything to elevate them. They weigh very little so it doesn't take much to support them. They are great for soft lighting a large area.
I don't really want to have anyone holding it, for the time being I'm aiming to do things with as tiny a crew as possible (if possible just me and actors). Also I'm trying do do things super cheap. And not start fires. Maybe I'll try ladders, I'm looking for something simple and practical, maybe something I can pick up at a hardware store. If I can clamp scoop lights to them as well that'd be great.
