I ended up getting a Panasonic PVGS400 (miniDV format). Im looking for tapes and i was wondering if i have to (or should) get panasonic tapes or would sony/JVC would work?

Any brand will work.

A little hint to help with head life - stick with one brand. Each brand
has a slightly different lubricant and it's recommended not to change
brands - at least not often. For some reason Sony tapes always gunk
up the video heads on my cameras so I use only Panasonic tapes.
I prefer the AYDVM63AMQ but the AY-DVM63PQ are just fine. I buy
from totalmedia.com.
