Hello everyone, I am what you would call a noob to filmmaking, in most aspects. I have written short stories off and on for as long as I can remember, but i have decided that I don't want to spend the rest of my life doing jobs and have careers that I am not passionate for. My goals as of now are to learn the basics of story telling, editing, filming, lighting and sound. Eventually I want to film and edit a short that I would like to write, direct and possibly act in. I have been using creative live as a learning tool for their free seminars, also I have been using a basic samsung camera to film just random things going on throughout the day. Any direction would be great. Look forward to talking with everyone here.

You should use that basic camera to shoot a short film. What better way to learn?
Write a short script, grab a couple of friends, direct it, edit it and then do that again.
Learn from your mistakes. Do that five times over the next five months and before
summer you will have five completed short films. Probably all pretty bad but each
one better than the one before it.

As you do that one film a month, write that "serious" short film you want to make.
By July or August you will have some experience as a director, writer, editor and
maybe even actor. and other people will know you as the guy who actually makes
movies rather than all those others who talk about making movies. Then you can
but together a small crew and a few actors and make your "first" short film.

Thank you for your response, what i have been doing lately is just filming my daily activities and in about a week or so im going to upload it to my computer and edit it to get some exp editing. But i do like your advice and im going to give that a go as well, writing a 5 minute short and seeing how it comes out, also im going to start a podcast thats going to be about movie reviews and my progress each week in entering the film business. Ill post on here when its up.
