Hello everybody, I am pretty new to making movies. I have been in a film making class at my high school for a semester, and it ends in a month. I have done some various things like camera, editing, directing, etc... I have done two movies, one of which is a stupid four minute movie and another is a mock stop motion commercial.
I don't have my own camera yet, but I'm saving up for a samsung SC-D365 Mini-DV camcorder. I also need a tripod and a good video editing program. I have no budget, and I have no crew except for my friends who are the actors...
I have movie ideas, and I have been working on scripts, but I'm not a good script writer. I have no money to hier a writer, more actors, and crew members, I am only 15 years old and I have no job.
I really need tips and suggestions.
Thank you,
Gray

welcome to the early stages of indie filmmaking. I would suggest that you dont wait for a great script or a great camera to shoot your movies. Make movies no matter your equipment. This will allow you to learn by doing and by making mistakes. I would then upgrade your equipment as you get older and have more money. I would also highly suggest trying to build things that you can't buy, like a boom pole or a dolly.

Your question is a very wide question and has been asked numerous times on this board. I would say shoot your movies then come back to us as you run into problems that way we have more specific answers for you. Or if you have a specific question besides "now what" right now then ask it. Good Luck!

I wasn't able to get a job. I tried at various places that I was able to go to, by walking, due to my mother needs the car to get to her job, and nobody would hire me. I gotta try and get a job at Publix. A mjaor set back however is that I also need to save for college, because my ass of a father won't help me get into college, and I need soem collateral to get a loan...

Anyways I found an even better camera I want, and I've been working on soem movie ideas, as far as who I should cast in them, how the movie should be like and the kind fo scenes, etc...

First thing I would suggest is get help. Find out if anyone at your school can write. If they can then you don't have to write the screenplay yourself and can concentrate on other things. Find out if anyone at your school has a camera or interest in film. Perhaps a teacher will help you if you tell them you need a film to get into college as a film major.

Second thing I would suggest is be careful about sounding like you are whining. Robert Rodriquez signed himself up to be a medical experiment test subject to get money and have time to write his screenplay. Tarantino worked in a video store. Saying you can't get a job within walking range may be true but doesn't really show the drive you may need. Lots of people have it rough.

I'm not popular, I would prefer to write my own story/script, and I can't get a job, because I'm 15. T_T
I have practically sold everything I have that isn't important to me or used by me.

Stop whining! It's making me ****ing sick.

Look, just keep going for jobs. Everywhere. I don't see why it has to be in walking range. Do you not have public transport anywhere nearby, if your mother is using the car?

Keep working on the scripts. Once you have made your first draft, send it out to EVERYONE you can. If you're not "popular" as you say, then if you feel, just send it out over the internet for people's critiques so you can improve and improve upon it, until you feel it's just what you want.

Stop being so negative OK. Negative-ism is what'll make you fail.

oleg,

Take it easy. This is a place for constructive help. Disagreements are great, heated discussions are fine and cold hard facts are welcomed.

Gray is 15. Getting started making movies can be overwhelming. You're advice is sound, your profanity (even self censored) isn't needed or helpful.

I live on a crappy island in the Atlantic Ocean. There are no public transportation vehicles anywhere. I am sorry if I sound like I'm whining.

I am currently working on a stupid movie script about these losers who are trying to obtain various things in life, but it ends in violence. It's a comedy. Short film.

Working on a film script for a movie to test my camera abilites called "My Friend Mr. Nobody" which is about a depressed teenager with mental issues who has an imaginary friend who he thinks is Satan and he sells his sould to him.

Another one is called "X is for Lovers" which is about these three failures in life who get hooked on X.

None of the scripts are finished, but do you think these will be good ideas?

Gray,

You have a great set of reasons why you CAN'T get a movie made. Each one valid and each one is shared by almost every filmmaker who ever lived.

You aren't alone.

Now that you have listed the reasons you can't make a movie, it's time to start listing the reasons you CAN. While I don't like the way oleg expressed himself, he's correct. Getting a movie made isn't a sprint - you don't need to get one finished right away. Work toward your goal. Take it slow - one step at a time.

Give your dad some slack - mine didn't pay for college for me either. The plus side is when I decided NOT to go at all, he could say a word about it. I ended up getting a job on a movie instead of spending money on college. One job led to another and before I knew it, I was earning a living making movies while my high school friends were finishing up their degrees - and thousands of dollars in debt.

Popular isn't all that great. But you wanna be popular? Make a couple of kickass movies. It's not easy - but if it were, then everyone would be doing it.

You got what it takes, Gray? It's DAMN hard to get a movie made.

I know I can't get a movie ready right away, but within a month after getting a camera I can go ahead and start one of my movies. I think I have what it takes, I just don't have the material items I need to do it yet.

It's not popularity as in I just wanna be popular, I don't have many ties to people who can act and help me out, that is all I meant by that. I have just enough friends to act. I can do the rest, but my "actors" would rather do comedy and the goth kids I'm cool with... are... well... weird, and overly act like drama queens.

College, I wanna go to college so I can become a teacher for a day job. My father pulls in $200,000+ a year, but he won't pay at least that is what I'm led to believe. He might surprise me however. It has been my goal to go to college after I get out of high school (taking a year off before I got to college however). I only want filmmaking to be a nonprofit hobby, and I wnana be a high school history teacher for a dary job... I'm weird, I know.

Not weird at all. We each have a path. Teachers should be highly paid, respected members of our society. I'm sad they aren't.

I understood what you meant by popular. You make a couple of kickass movies and more people will want to be part of it. People who are serious about acting will respond seriously to a director who has actually MADE a movie.

Work to your strengths. You're friends want to make a comedy - make a really funny comedy. The Goth kids are weird and drama queens? Sounds great to me! Make a weird movie with these crazy people. I did a Goth movie a few years ago - we had a great time. Strange people, but an interesting movie.

Sorry if I came across too harsh.. which I think I did.
Gray_Matter, you just came across to me in your posts as very whiney, that's all. You seemed to be very negative.

What is this island you live on?
Where did you get the camera to film those movies you HAVE made?

And don't tell yourself you're wierd.
You wanna become a teacher, so what? That's great actually! Someone who isn't into film for the money!

No problem, you didn't seem to harsh. lol. I know, I seem like that often I guess.

The camera I used was a Canon GL-2 Mini DV. I like it, but it's retail price is about 4-5 times more than what I can afford.

I live on Hilton Head Island.

I have my first movie I made on the web.
?url? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3171752037024803708?/url?
It has no plot and it was a film based off improvising. I was only given one day to work on it, and one hour to edit it on a program I've never used before. I know it's stupid and makes no sense, but all the weird kids at school liked it. I was dissapointed on the fact that we couldn't get Ruben to look homeless. The first 30 or so seconds into the movie with Ruben walking was just a camera test, and we did another scene that was supposed to be in place of that, but it didn't turn out good and a gator was coming up to sunbathe.

How do you gain access to this camera? Is it your school camera?

Yes, sorry, forgot to write that down. It is a school camera, and the class will be over this semester, so that means no movies during the summer til I get my own camera. T_T
