Hey all here at the forum, I'm new. I wanted some opinions and suggestions from anyone here that can help.

I'm a "wannabe" film student. I have been attending Lamar University in Beaumont for the past 2 years after High school since my parents basically told me I need to get a real job and I can't afford to go to film school (tuition at Lamar is roughly only 2k a semester).

Well, two years later I really want to pursue my dream of film-making rather than major in something I have little to no interest in. Other than a year's worth of a film class in high school I have no real experience in film and I wanted to know if anyone out there has any suggestions for my situation.

I do not have, as far as I know, a way to obtain the kind of cash needed to go to great schools like USC, NYU or AFI's Conservatory. Though I'd love to go to them.

What can I do to get into film? Do I really have any options?

Thanks to any and all who reply in advance.
Peazow.

The simple answer is: make movies.

Seriously, though, finish up whatever you're doing now. It helps to have skills outside of the film world because, frankly, you aren't going to make very much money (if any) to start with. In fact, you'll more than likely be SPENDING money. I didn't go to a film school per se; I majored in media studies, so I had sort of an all-around media experience, but I did sort of minor in English. I've been working at an advertising company for over a year, but I still try to do the film thing (in fact I just shot my second film this past weekend).

There are ways (sometimes better ones) to learn filmmaking rather than going to film school. Read up on the subject. There are hundreds of books on filmmaking. Start finding people in your area who are into the same stuff. You can learn a lot from other people. The best way to learn, though, is to do it. Don't worry so much about how things work in the big-time film world. Make your own rules. Get yourself a camera, a script, and some actors. Even if your first, second, or twenty-third movie sucks, keep on cranking them out. You'll eventually get a good one.

Me - "Yeah, I'd really like to direct movies."
Bruce Campbell - "Cool. Just don't suck."
