I am making video copies of a short horror film, the film is being played off the timelime in Premier, editing system, and straight onto VHS, but the sound, sounds slightly muted and needs to be turned up...what could I be doing wrong?

Original sound was recorded with a shotgun mic, mkh416 and it was sound editied on a pro tools digi 001 system. My sound man was worried about it being quiet and so with his mixes paid no regard to the sound meters and got it as loud as possible without it distorting....could that be limiting our video copies?

Thanks you guys!
