I'm completely new to film, like I'm so new that I get lost when I start hearing someone talk about features of a camcorder. I know its not the best, but I want to know what you think. I had no actor, except for my hand lol, and I had no lighting ?film kind of dark? and tripod. Honestly tell me what you think.

Ok, but this is going to hurt.

First, it's impossible to see most of it properly. It's not 'kind of dark' it's way beyond that. You need to learn how to light you shots or, failing that, how to fix it in editing.

Second, the shots I could see were pretty badly composed. You've got that shot of the cross that you (inexplicably) keep going back to, and you've got the frame cropping part of the top of it. You're way too close to most of your shots and the way you've got the camera moving has a very 'home-video' feel to it. If you were using a tripod I couldn't tell most of the time as your camera was very rarely still.

Then you have this really badly-executed POV move then 10 seconds of 'camera on the floor' and I have no idea why. I'm not getting any kind of coherent narrative out of any of this. If you have a story I'm missing it completely and if you don't than you shouldn't bother. BTW, what were you trying to get across with the music? Feels like a bad choice to me.

In other words, it's bad. Really, really, bad. Badly lit, badly shot, badly conceived. Don't make another one like it ever, ever again.

Ok, enough bashing. Yeah, you made a shitty film. You're not alone. In fact, if there's a filmmaker here who hasn't made a bad film (present company definitely included) than I'll eat a pound of ground glass.

So yeah, your first film was bad. Now make another one and try to make it better.

Rinse and repeat.

yay! thank you so much for the honesty! I saw it coming lol, so no hard feelings. and yeah I had no tripod lol. I mostly made the film because I wanted to get the feel of a camera and it took me 15 minutes to shoot. My next film will definitely be a lot better.

What I see as an encouraging sign is, regardless of what you consider your first movie (and what actually for the most part looks like a camcorder left accidentally on while someone was walking around with it), you are clearly intrigued by the idea of making movies, because you took time to find this forum, read a bit around and post something here, expecting answers.

So, if you actually are interested in making movies, you'll need to approach it with a bit more forethought. Come up with an idea for a short story. Write that idea down. Try and transform what you wrote into a movie script. Take that camcorder of yours and shoot what you wrote. Get the video you shot into your computer. Try and edit the stuff to make it better.

While shooting, try and make the images VISIBLE (because those in your movie were NOT).

Everyone here will always bend over backwards in order to be encouraging to those who are interested in filmmaking. If you really are, try make use of this forum to learn.
