i've been reading post on this site for a while but this is my first actual post. What i wanted to know was if anyone uses music programs like band on a box or fruit loops studio or anything like that for their indie films and would recomend using them over hiring a composer or buying music rights or royalty free music cds. thanks

I use Garageband, now standard on most Macs, to create music for my films. If you do not have the money to purchase rights to songs, then I do think that using programs to create your own is an excellent idea.

I use Cubase VST which is simple enough. Having said that I an focused on the audio side. People tell me "Band in a Box" is the easiest (and I think it is cheap or at least it is cheaper...).

Alternatively, try somewhere like www.gosounds.com. They seem to be breaking the mold by offering royalty free at iTunes prices. Good quality too. Their focus is the film and media market so they are learning.

Have you tried a soundtrack creation software called "Sonicfire Pro"?

I've heard some good results with their "Filmscore" series: Richard Band Vol 1-4 Action, Horror, Dramatic, Suspense
