Does anyone on her have any idea how much a new recording head cost? Is it better to just replace the camera or the head?

Probably $200-300. So if the camera isn't worth that much, you're probably better off getting a new one.
If there's a local video repair shop you might get a better price than the manufacturer, so you could call around first.
