Ok, I am planning to make a feature length film based on a book. Is there any legal rights I have to obtain to make a film based off of a book?? If it is a non-profit film? We don't plan on making money for making it.

Profit or non-profit you need to get the rights to the book.

The movie Nosfaratu was based on Dracula. They changed the names of the cities, characters and the ending and still the widow of Bram Stoker was able to have nearly every copy destroyed.

You are far better off avoiding this sort of thing.

Depends upon the book. I've never optioned one and to be honest would never consider optioning one.

There is a chance you could option it cheap becuase the author didn't like the movie. There is an option you could never option it because the author hated the movie-process. There is a chance you could tick off alot of folks in Hollywood in the process if people do see your movie.

What's the upside?

The book "Jumper" by Steven Gould has already been optioned. That option includes sequel
rights and remake rights. No matter what the author thought of the movie, he has already
sold all movie rights to that book. He no longer owns any movie or TV rights to that novel.
