I'm trying to put together a makeshift boom mic, and I've just been looking around lately for some decent microphones. Right now I'm just looking for a semi cheap microphone like 30 bucks or so that I can use but I'm afraid that it won't pick up the audio when filming the actor...
I'll probably end up upgrading to an expensive mic later but right now I can't afford a 500 mic, also I have a cannon so I don't know how that effects if the connector will be able to fit into my mic jack on the camcorder and whatnot..

I was looking at the Sony F-V320, but some people were saying that the audio can be really low..... Any suggestions?

-thanks as always
oh yeah I have a cannon hv30

First- the connections to your camera have nothing to do with the mic, but rather the XLR cable and, if needed, adapters.

Second- You're not going to get much from a $30 mic. Pretty much the cheapest decent directional mic you'll get are some of the low end shures for about 100. Still, if you simply don't have it, I'd recommend looking at brands that specialize in professional audio, such as audio technica and shure.

Just to clarify: Some people are confused about a "boom mic". The "boom" is a piece of
equipment - most often a pole of some kind - that the microphone is attached to. The
key is getting the mic close to the actors. The further away the mic is from the actors,
the higher the volume needs to be. The higher the volume, the more ?noise? you get.
Your goal is to have a very high signal to noise ratio - more signal (the dialogue) less
noise (the background). Even a very good, expensive Sennheiser mounted on the
camera will pick up a lot of background ambiance because it?s far away from the actors.

Check out the AT835B. It?s a workable mic, a little muddy and not as directional as it
should be. The AT835ST is a good mic for the price, but it, too, sounds a bit muddy -
the vocals don?t sound crisp enough for me.

I?ve never used Azden mic?s. They?re inexpensive and I don?t hear too many good things
about them, but if that's all you can afford it's MUCH better than using the camera mic.

I've seen these mics for as little as $50
