Hi, Since I cannot afford a decent camera or lighting equipment I have to make do with the sony handycam I have. I would like to make my films look better visually. Is there anything I can do.

Proper lighting can make the difference. Do a search on this site and this discussion came up somewhere before. The main answer was proper three point lighting structure can make a movie look a bit more film-like just as really flat lighting can make film look somewhat as if it is digital. There are other tricks If memory serves but the other tricks only help a little in comparison to the lighting issue.

I'm going to just flat out say no. Without decent lighting you can't
do anything to make the image from a handycam look like it was
shot on film.
However, as rj says, there are many posts here about how to light
with lights available at home improvement stores. Using light
properly can help a lot. A reflector (a piece of while foamcore) can
improve the light on an actors face. Lighting the background and
using a back light on the actor will seperate the subject from the
background. That looks more professional
You've read some of my posts here, rob. I'm a big believer in
do-it-yourself solutions.

Good lighting will certainly make it look better, but so will these:
Progressive Scan
Using White Balance
Shutter speed
