I'm considering going to the Colorado Film School as my family and I will soon be moving there... But I have some questions - does Majoring in Writing/Directing or Post Production really pay well in the future? Will I have to move out to California or NY after my four years to actually get noticed? I love movies, I love making films with friends and I always have ideas and such but i'm really trying to think about my future. Should I study for film or keep it as a hobby?

No. Movie making is one career where having a degree doesn't matter. If you write a great script or direct a great indie movie, no one will ask to see your diploma.

No. People notice good filmmakers all over the country. But the main movie making hubs are LA and NY.

Only YOU know what's best for you. I say, don't study at a college, get a job on a set and keep making your own movies.

University will give you some exposure to some filmmaking techniques, but I honestly feel sorry for the graduates that I've seen coming on sets for the first time. The universities, colleges, etc have mislead them into believing they will graduate and BE (the director, writer, etc.) Sure - go to college, but in the meantime get some real education by trying it yourself with a hand held video camera and edit it with your home computer. You'll be way out ahead of the pack. Also, don't lose sight of of the fact that some day you'll have to actually find a job in filmmaking - keep your eye on what you need to learn be able to solve problems for Producers, Directors, Gaffers, etc.
