Neither. It only depends on your preference for the type of software you want to use, how familiar you are with the different operating systems, and what your budget is.

Check the FAQ for some more guidance on hardware issues:

i grew up using windows machines, and by profession i am bound to use one. but, as an independent film maker i finally made the switch this summer to the mac platform, and i love it. it is very intutative. i have had some hardware problems, my comp super drive crashed after two weeks, which has made me a skeptic, but i like the platform so much i ordered a new one, and my new g5 is on the way. i would encourage you to get into a mac. you could pick up an emac with a gig of ram and a 160gig hd and a super-drive for about $1200 US with a student discount, which anyone can use regardless of student status. that is a pretty good deal, for a box with that much power.
just to compare. i also have a pc laptop with a 1.7 p4 processor and 512 ram. when rendering side by side in premiere on the pc and fcp4 on the mac the mac was roughly 4 times faster.
additionally, if you are a novice ilife makes it possible to create, edit, produce, and burn with little hassle. if you are pro fcp4, motion, dvd studio pro and shake will help you do the same super-sized.

so you see, you mac can grow with you, it has stable software, which pcs do not, and can make great looking movies with even the 'free' software that is provided with ilife.

hope this helps.

i started out on a pc and got a mac powerbook about a year ago, i absolutely love it...the simplicity is amazing. also includes imovie which is easy to use for beginners.

checking back in, just got a new imac g5 two days ago, it is blazing fast. i love the mac platform. when it comes down to an entry level system is really cheap and really easy to use, which will prime you for moving up to a more expensive system and more expensive, creative software.
