So, I have an assignment for my video production class.
Essentially, I have to find a night scene from a movie (though being able to tell its night is not necessary) and try and recreate the lighting in that scene.

The assignment is a minimum of 3 shots. From a practical standpoint, I want something that is somewhat easy in terms of props and location etc.

Any suggestions on possible scenes or scene fragments?

I could be wrong but I think the end of CASABLANCA, at the runway, took place at night/early morning. Two guys, fog, and a matte painting.

I would search for scenes that use one or two specific lights. For example, in HALLOWEEN, Jamie Lee Curtis comes out of the room where her dead friends are. She is standing there, upset. In the dark doorway, next to her, Michael's face slowly appears. Remember?

I haven't looked at it in a while, but it seemed like they used a bluish gel on the main light, for the night look. For Michael's face, they used another light on a dimmer switch. They gradually brought the dimmer up, to fade his face in.

Search your movie collection and look for obvious setups. Some scenes put a light behind window blinds, so you get shadowed bands on the actors. An interrogation scene is usually lit by the light hanging right above the table, where the suspect and cop sits. The areas by the walls are in shadow. If you want more light on the actor's face, use a light colored tabletop to reflect it. If not, use a dark table.

I've noticed that a lot of X-FILES' episodes use a single light, so that one side of the actors' faces are in total shadow. For lesser shadows, use a low powered fill light. For eye lighting, you can cut a slit in a piece of cardboard or wood and shine a light through it and aim it across the actor's eyes.

Just to get you thinking....
