You can't connect you're camera to your computer via USB (if you want to get your footage on the computer, that is). You need to connect it via firewire. Buy a fire wire cable and connect it from your camera into your computer (if you don't have a firewire port on yuor computer, you need to buy a firewire card.

To my knowledge, USB cannont transfer the video from your camera to the computer fast enough, therefore it has to be done via firewire. Firewire can transfer info, at the least, at 400kb per second (could be wrong on the kb, but its 400 something per second) or at 800 per second, depending upon the type of firewire card you have.

My video camera does not have a Firewire port so I have to transfer all my footage onto the computer with a USB port. It seems to work fine. It gets put on the computer at the same rate it plays it, so if you have an hour of footage it takes an hour put it on.
I'm sure why it thinks its a web-cam. All I can suggest is to re-read the instruction booklet and maybe mess around with the drivers in Control Panel.
Good luck.

My cam doesn't have a firewire port. But it does have a DV port. The cam didn't come with the Dv wire. only USB. Ive have got all my footage on to my computer useing USB. But like i said. Its telling me i don't have a Cam connected to the computer. Won't let me write back to the tape. and makes the image look like its a web cam. I think im suppost to be useing that DV port to transfer the video to the computer and the UBS as aweb cam. O i was wrong i have the GR-DV500US

I own the professional JVC camera (the GY-DV500) and am a big fan of their cameras so I was surprised it doesn't have firewire.

I did a quick Google check and the first site that came up was a product review listed firewire as a spec on this camera.

Maybe you should check the manual again.

I look through the manual again and it doesn't say anything about firewire. All it says is connected through USB or DV. But all web sites say it has firewire. Im thinking there is something you can plug in. like a dv to firewire connector or something like that anyone know anything about that?

It's my understanding that DV IS firewire.

Since you have tried USB and aren't happy with the results, is there any reason you haven't tried the DV connection?

Firewire is a trademarked term of Apple Computer. To my knowledge, unless the company paid to use the term, it's called IEEE 1394, or it may even be labeled iLink. As Instigator said, DV is essentially Firewire.

You may need to buy a 4-pin to 6-pin or a 4-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable in order to connect your camera's DV output to your computer; just check the connections.

In case you're confused, go to ?url? http://www.cablestogo.com/resources/usb.asp?/url? to see diagrams of the various connectors.

Hope that helped.
