I'm at a point were going to a brick & mortar film school is a little out of my reach. I still want to learn as much as I can about filmmaking. Is the DVD set of Dov Simens' film school worth buying? has anyone every used it? Does it say more than "Get a script, turn on the camera, say action & cut. Congrats, you made a movie"?

Not really. He is a great motivational speaker who tries
to motivate people to "do; not talk". And he tells it like
it is; get a script, find a cast and crew, make a movie. Do
that again and again until you get good at it.
Some people need an outside source to motivate them If
you do then the course is what you need. If you don't need
others to motivate you, but have your own internal motivation
and drive to make movies you don't need this course.

Exactly.
Don't try to make a movie. Don't read about making a movie.
Don't talk about making a movie.
Make a movie.

The value of ANY filmschool, program, workshop, book, DVD, etc can only be measured as it relates to what YOU SPECIFICALLY want to do. To ask, "will this school/etc help me?" requires that YOU know and fully understand the SPECIFIC job you want to be doing. Just saying "filmmaking" isn't enough if you want to do this for a living. Figure out what it is you want to do FIRST, and THEN look for help to learn how to do THAT job as well as learning what your life will TRULY be like if you do indeed succeed (and what it will be like if you don't!)
So, is Don Simens' program "worth it?" Dunno. What do YOU really want to do and can that program teach you enough to help you achieve it?

You're both making good points. I don't need an outside source to motivate me to make movies. I do that already. I'm looking more for creditbility. Whenever I say I'm a director, I keep getting asked where I went to school. Without an answer, it makes me feel like I can't be taken seriously.

Anyone who asks where you went to school is not interested in
you as a director. And saying, "I watched the Dov Simens DVDs"
will not change that attitude. Anyone who is serious about you
as a director will ask, "What films have you directed?" Can you
seriously imagine someone asking Ridley Scott where he went
to school and when he says he didn't do to film school not taking
him seriously?
Who has not taken you seriously? Did you show them your work
as a director? Did you lose a job as a director because you didn't
go to film school? Do you honestly feel those people would have
taken you seriously if you had told them you took the Dov Simens
2-Day Film school on DVD? Would they have then offered you the
job? What that (and not your work) have given you more credibility?
Seriously; who keeps asking you where you went to school?
