buying an imac g5, deciding between one with standard 512 mb (17" screen) and a 2GB (20 inch screen).
the price difference is just about what the memory would cost.

so i need to decide between saving money (important) or buying the more expensive one as i would need to upgrade the memory later anyway to use final cut pro 5. (the screen is not that much bigger, and it?s less portable which is important to me)

so do i need the 2gb?

there will be only a little visual effects in the feature-length film, just to kind of showcase that we can do it, perhaps one scene...

other than that , it's a reality-based film...

so what difference will the extra 1.5 gb make?

just faster rendering? how much faster? is it worth the extra $200 (for a microbudget outfit)

thank you!

p.s. the 20? also has a 250gb harddrive vs. 160 on the 17.

will i need that much more?

didn't people shoot digital features a few years ago with a paltry 10gb hdd?

Is RAM important, IS RAM IMPORTANT!?!

I'm not going to explain exactly what RAM is, if you don't know I shun you, so let's just say that the more RAM the faster the little computer will go.

I would definitly go for the extra memory. I would say a 1 gig minimum for an editing system. 512 just isn't enough.

so would the 512 freeze up when editing a scene?

say you had a short 1-minute scene with 12 shots in it, how long would it take with the 512 and 1.5?

if it's just a matter of convenience, i'll save the money and put it into something that can be seen on the screen.....

is the screen size an issue when editing? the 20" is only about an inch or two wider and taller....

It's not a matter of convenience; it's a matter of pride. You can't go around telling people you're only running 512; they'll laugh at you. You might as well write stupid across your forehead and run around naked.

But as to whether or not it'll freeze up, no it won't. Rendering isn't going to take you that much longer. The hard drive as nothing to do with speed (as long as it has a quick RPM).

Screen size, seventeen will be fine. I'm currently editing on a 13" while I wait for my new monitor to get here. I have to squint to see anything, but I'm getting by (if barely.)
