i just need somebody to explain to me what classifies a independent film as a independent film. Like is it all out of your pocket or are there independent film companys??? and if so what makes them independent? so what seperates hollywood films to inpendent films and when can i call my films indepedent films?
thanks
I believe the cinema is one of our principal forms of art. It is an incredibly powerful way to tell uplifitng stories that can move people to cry with joy and inspire them to reach for the stars.-Wes Craven
"Anyone who has ever been privileged to direct a film also knows that, although it can be like trying to write 'War and Peace' in a bumper car in an amusement park, when you finally get it right, there are not many joys in life that can equal the feeling." - Stanley Kubrick
Generally a film is considered to be an "independent film" if it is made independently of the Hollywood studio system. That is to say that it has been made without the involvement of one of the big Hollywood studios: Universal, Warner Brothers, Disney, Paramount, Fox, Dreamworks, Sony (Columbia/Tristar), MGM et al.
Of course the line between Hollywood and independent has become increasingly blurry over the past decade or so because most of the studios have their own "specialty" divisions which produce films that would be considered to fall into the indie arena, and a few "independent" production/distribution companies have gotten big enough that they are able to behave like mini-studios (i.e. Miramax, New Line, Artisan etc).
