Hi guys. Well, I am fifteen year-old neophyte at this whole film thing. I've been reading forums and articles about independent filmmakers and it seems so confusing. It all started when my class had to do a project on a book. Since I had a camcorder, we decided to do a film. Naturally, I wrote the script and directed the film. It was only about three minutes long but gave me so much ideas how much more I can do with my own ideas. So, here's a few questions that seems greek to me, but I assume all you pros out there can easily answer my questions. ?:)?

1. What is the ranking order of quality in camcorders? (such as hi8, minidv, etc.)

2. I have a sony CCD-TRV87. It uses Hi8 cassettes. Is there any way that I can edit the recorded cassette on the computer? If not, which type of cameras (not to expensive) can let me edit on the computer?

3. Does it cost money to send in a feature film to film festivals?

I have a lot more questions but I'll just start with these questions.

Hi8 will need to be digitized in order to edit on a computer hard drive. You can do this with an ADC - Analog to Digital Converter.

Any digital camera will let you load the video onto your computer to edit. They range in price from a couple of hundred to several thousand.

There's also HDV now appearing at the top of the list, though Digibeta would still be better at SD resolution since the cameras are generally better. Which is, actually, a good point: a good Hi8 camera may still be better than a cheap DV camera even though the tape format has less resolution.

Personally, when I edit Hi8 I've just copied it to DV tapes and edited from there, otherwise you'll need to get hold of an analogue video capture card, which seem quite rare these days. Another option would be to borrow a Digital-8 camera for the edit, that should let you put the Hi8 tape in the camera and capture by Firewire as DV.
