Hello there, I am a young man and ever since I was a little kid I've always wanted to make films. Now I'm a bit older and I bought a video camera, so I wanted to get started right away. My aim right now, are short films. I've made a couple of them in the past, but now that I'm ready to do something the ideas just won't come to me. Any new idea that I have requires intricate scenes or a lot of people in order for it to work, the problem is: I'm pretty much alone in this project. My tripod, my camera and me. So at this point I don't really know how to make any progress, I mean.. I often find myself recording objects and playing around with the focus, exposure, etc. I just need to get ideas flowing so, any ideas? (pun intended) ?:D?

hey airstrike.
Sounds similar to my situation. What I would suggest, is to take something incredibly ordinary (ie. brushing your teeth, taking out the trash) shoot it and make a project out of it. Try creating different moods with shots, sound, effects and see what you come up with. If you wait around for ideas to come, sometimes you miss out on all the practice you could be doing, and who knows.. maybe an idea will spring from that.

Anyways, good luck.

yeah, obviously you won't be filming a dialog scene between two or more people, UNLESS, you play all the characters. Maybe you should try that! Good way to work on your acting skills as well!

Solitary film maker? No ideas? Join the club, Airstrike! It's a big one!?:D?

Fwiw, I think the biggest hurdle we beginners face is this; we all think our first movie has to be perfect! We worry that we'll be so disappointed with our first effort if it's bad, that we'll just give up and abandon something that we really love.

Try this. Slip a fresh battery into the camera and take that sucker outside and just roll it on whatever takes your eye first. Let your instinct take over. Whatever you shoot first, that's the germ of your film. If you shoot the sky, maybe you really want to make a space film. If you shoot the trees and bushes, maybe an adventure. If you turn around and shoot the back door, maybe a thriller.

Let your own instinct give you your ideas. Nothing else can do it better.

Btw, if your username is anything to go by, I think secretly you want to make a war film. Lots of strange things happen in war, some of them only involve one man, one rifle, and one hole in the ground.

Good luck.

Kurt.

How about joining a film producers' association? There is usually at least one in every major city, so you can get feedback and pick up ideas. Not only that, with group dynamics, you can get a surge of energy from being with people who have the same dreams.

I'm at a similar stage, so I know how you feel. Good luck! 🙂

I've never heard of a film producers association. Can you link to a few in the major cities?

I'm no expert in this business, though I'm beginning to love it, so bear with me.

There's the Independant Film Producers' Forum.

http://www.ifp.org/

In Canada, there's the Victoria Independant Film Producers' Association, in the Province of British Columbia

http://www.vifpa.com/

On the other side of the continent, also in Canada, there's the Producers' Association of Newfoundland.

http://www.nlproducers.com/

In Chicago, there's the Chicago Film Producers' Alliance

http://www.meetup.com/chicagofilmproducers/

There are tons all over the place. In fact, where you have two or more persons interested in film, you'll have an association, even if they just meet at Starbucks to discuss the latest Spielberg movie.

How'd I do? 😉

Here's an idea... a young man (you?) is trapped inside his house, and he can't get out. The doors are locked, as are the windows, there is no cellular connection, phone lines are cut, no wifi, etc. I'll leave the ending up to you.

And one more...

A young man is investigating into a federal case, person, or event. He stumbles across something valuable/important and suddenly, no one knows he exists. He is said to have died. No records exist of him.

Now, you end it.

Thanks guys, I've been doing some short videos recently and I already came up with some ideas, next thing is writing them and getting some people to work with me.

For ideas to pop into your head one should never be idle. One should should always be actively doing something, my example would be, meditation. When I meditate my mind wonders all the time, and I think of the most random ideas, this is when I stop my meditation, write down whatever idea I had and go back to meditating. (I know the whole point of meditation is thrown out the window but I atleast I get ideas 🙂 )

If you have the money, you might want to consider taking some filmmaking classes. I took a 16 week digital filmmaking course and it was great. I finished my third short film in 2009. You not only meet people who are serious about filmmaking, you learn about production, editing, hiring cast, crew, etc.

Also, hanging out with other creative people, may get your juices running.

One more thing: Once you start producing your own films, you can start entering them in film festivals and get exposure.
