Hi you guys,

Short story is: My mom wants me to get a two-year
degree, for a "real job" while I pursue my film
making dreams. I would love to get something that
is half way relavent to film making. The only thing
I can think of is photography. I do not want to get
something in computers or medical, because I for one
do not want to work a 9 to 5, I want something creative,
and most of all I want something some what related to film
making and the entertainment business.

I like Photography, but to be honest it is not my first choice.
I have always been into theatre and acting from a early age, and
I feel I have a great vision for film directing. Like I said above
I'm not going to get a degree in something basic, or something I
dislike, so photography comes to mind. It is something I do not
dislike for sure, its not typical 9 to 5, and I feel it can be
related to the film industry.

That is my question for you guys. Do you think photography will be
a good career to have to pay the bills while I work on climbing the
film industry latter? Do you think if I'm good, photography could
even open some doors for me, in the entertainment business?

Well, Thanks ahead of time for reading and/or answering this post.
PLEASE feel free to add more info other then the questions I asked.

Thank
-An(Drew)

No to the first question. Yes to the second.

Making a living as a photographer is just as
difficult as making a living as...

Well you don't say what you want to do for a
living. If you want to be a director of photography
then starting in photography is a great choice. If
you want to be an editor, know photography can't
hurt. If you want to be a caterer for movies I
suspect photography won't help much.

You could get a degree in business. The more
you know about business the better prepared you
are for any filmmaking dream. And going into
some kind of business can be a good career to
have to pay the bills while you work on climbing the
film industry ladder.

Well, as far as what I would want to do would be a
film director. Would photography help with that at
all? Owning a photography studio, shooting fashion,
or even just shooting by hour wouldn't be good money?

I guess d idea is good. But to become a photographer u 1st have to click some beautiful snaps and ask the experts as too whether d photos u clicked were good r bad n what improvements hav to be made.N send it to some photo exhibition.U just cant keep saying I want to be this that without tryin..U hav to try n when u feel good just move forward..
And the director thing I guess a good photographer may or may not be a good director. But a good photographer can easily create a good visual impact to each frame wat has to be shot..But a good director has to hav hold on the content of d movie(visualise d movie totally),story, actors and other crew members who support d movie.
I think right now get into some kinda job n with d money u get buy a good pro camera n start shootin pictures...Later wen u become n expert try making contacts with d film crew meet any of DOP n work as assistant for a couple of years...And u r thorough wit the theme wat a movie is al about..Then u r d boss..U can be director r actor r d cinematographer any thing...But u cant do nothing without trying

Owning a photography studio has a lot of overhead. And a
lot of overhead means you must work hard to find and keep
paying clients. That isn't a part time job. There is so much
competition that earning enough money part time, shooting
by the hour, seems unrealistic. It will be just as much a
struggle to make a living shooting fashion as it would be directing
music videos. Why not get a degree in videography and open
a music video company? At least you're directing.

You want to be a director. I assume you have been directing
short films for a while. If you want to take photography classes
to satisfy your mom, that's cool and learning any skill can only
help. But you should concentrate on making more short films.
A director directs.

Can you share some of your short films with us?
