Hi
I am kannan from Chennai, India. I am a movie fanatic . I am a software engineer. My interests are in film appreciation , film making, direction. Though I have been a software professional I have been seriously considering these interests( I have been incluenced lately by Tarantino and his movies which I saw when i was in New York last month) . How do I start my career in film making? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks for the oppurtunity.

Kannan

Right here on filmmaking.net you'll find these links

Even if you don't want to go to school (and in my opinion film school is a waste of time) you can connect with people who have the same interest as you. Offer to work on student films.

Make your own short movies. You don't need top of like equipment - you need desire and above all, you need dedication. Not dedication to the thought of making movies - many, many "filmmakers" talk about making movies - you need to shoot. Shoot one short movie a month. On a 20 year old VHS if that's all you have. Learn the craft and develop your skills.

In the meantime, you start making connections in the professional world. Sweep the floors of stages. Serve food on a set. Anything that will get to in contact with people making movies.

India leads the world in the annual output of feature films. It won't be easy. But if you don't get out there today, you will miss a great opportunity that won't be available tomorrow.

START MAKING FILMS PERIOD. Filmmaking is all about trial and error from the beginning, borrow books, write a few scripts and start filming anything and everything you see to get a feel for the camera. There is no right or wrong way to break into the film industry. If you dont have any connections dont sweat. Dont get down on yourself or obsess with the notion of having to kiss ass. The bottom line: If your good the world will take notice.
